Dr Fiona Solomon

Dr Fiona Solomon Fiona is the group co-ordinator of the Social Values team at CSIRO Minerals. She has led a number of research projects on social and sustainability issues around the minerals industry in Australia, including stakeholder and community perspectives of mining, stakeholder and community consultation processes, and independent verification of performance. Her PhD thesis in 1997 was a philosophical and sociological analysis of engineering and technological endeavours.

Mr Roy Lovel

Roy has a research background in iron ore processing and contributes to the work of the Sustainable Development group through his technical knowledge and commitment to the principles of sustainable development.  He is interested in strategic and long-term challenges for the industry and the role of R&D in addressing those.

Mr Terry Norgate

Terry is a chemical engineer with a background in modeling, simulation and analysis of mineral processing, chemical and metallurgical processes. More recently he has been involved in conducting techno-economic assessments and life cycle assessments of such processes. Terry is  the leader of the Life Cycle Assessment project.

Dr Evie Katz

For the past thirteen years Evie has worked as researcher, lecturer and tutor in the School of Social Sciences at La Trobe University. Her teaching and research areas have been varied - from anthropological theory to cyberspace and society. Her doctoral study focused on workplace change, in particular changes in technology, management, and systems of recruitment and promotion.

Mr Simon Trang

Simon is a chemical engineer / programmer with more than 15 years experience in modeling, simulation  and analysis of mineral / metallurgical processes and software development. Recently he has been involved in developing process simulation packages and conducting  life cycle assessments of such processes.

Ms Helen Cheney 

(Associate at AIFS)

Helen is a social scientist whose research interests include sustainable development and the minerals industry. From 2000-2002 she worked on a number of projects at CSIRO Minerals, including the Victorian Communities research and the MMSD Project. She is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Australian Institute for Family Studies in Melbourne. Helen is completing her PhD in Development Studies at LaTrobe University. She has a BA (Hons) degree in Development Studies from LaTrobe University, a Masters degree from the University of Melbourne and a Graduate certificate in Mineral Economics from the WA School of Mines at Curtin University of Technology.

 

Dr Wendy Mee  

Wendy is a lecturer in the School of Social Sciences at La Trobe University, Melbourne. Currently I am participating in a number of projects in the areas of SEI and Nanotechnology, as well as a social audit of the Lihir gold mine (PNG) with Dr Martha Macintyre from the University of Melbourne. I have a long-standing interest in science and technology studies, having worked and taught in the area of new technologies including ICTs, biotechnologies and nanotechnology. I have also taught international development and conducted participatory research in a number of Asian countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Marshall Islands, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Uzbekistan.
